Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh (Duke) Programme
The Duke of Edinburgh (Duke) Programme is an Award that is internationally recognized for its holistic student development. Duke is open to any young person aged 14-24. Each young person builds their own Duke programmes – picking their own activities and choosing which cause to volunteer for – in order to achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke Award. The Duke is run in schools, youth clubs, hospitals, fostering agencies, prisons, sports clubs and more, internationally.
Students at HIS can do the Duke in tandem with their Services Action, MRISA Sports, Project-Based Learning, and CAS courses. Students complete the hours for their award and take two expeditions: one for practice, and the other to qualify for their award. We've teamed up with The Learning Project to explore some beautiful Vietnamese hiking areas and aim to develop teamwork, perseverance, and respect for our environments. Recruiting for Duke begins at the start of each school year so be on the look out for information in August 2026!

Student Voice
Completing the Bronze level of the International Award for Young People helped me develop new skills and challenge myself. Through service, physical activity, and skill development, I improved my teamwork, responsibility, and perseverance. The experience pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me grow more confident and independent. Throughout this process, there were moments when my team and I struggled, there were moments where we got lost and didn't know what to do, but we endured the harsh environment and circumstances, we learned our lessons from the practice run, and we at last completed the bronze award. If I had one piece of advice, I would give it to the people who are considering doing AYP: do not overcomplicate the packing. During the practice run, our team overpacked our bags, and we had over 10kg of resources we didn't use or just didn't need. And after we got rid of all the excess resources, our journey became much smoother since we used less energy traversing through the land.
